The Story of Bathukamma

The word Bathukamma means “Mother Goddess, come alive.” The festival originated in Telangana, rooted in a legend of Goddess Gauri. According to the story:

  • Goddess Gauri slew the demon Mahishasura but later fell into deep sleep.
  • Devotees prayed for her revival by arranging beautiful stacks of seasonal flowers in a cone shape, singing songs, and dancing around them.
  • Their devotion awakened the Goddess, who blessed them with prosperity, fertility, and well-being.

Bathukamma is also linked with the celebration of womanhood, harvest, and gratitude to Mother Nature. Flowers like gunuka, tangedu, and marigold are offered, symbolizing purity, love, and divine energy.
